Macaws are the largest and most flamboyant of the parrots. They can be up to 36 inches long from the top of their head to the tip of their tail. Because of their large size, they require quite a space commitment. They can also be quite destructive and very loud. Macaws are highly intelligent and are often used as performing birds because of their beauty and their ability to learn. They can talk, but usually not well and they can be very loud. They can also inflict a lot of damage if they bite. They usually live 40 to 50 years, so macaw ownership is a long term and expensive commitment. They generally are not suitable for homes with small children. Macaws need a lot of attention to remain good pets, but if you can provide for their needs they make excellent companion birds. Generally, macaws are pets for more experienced bird owners.
