Petco's Dog Training Expert gives a handful of tips on how to keep the Halloween Candy away from your pet. http://www.petco.com
....A question actually came to us and asked, "How do you keep your children from rewarding your dog with some of the trick or treat candy?" Or even from your dog eating into it. The best thing to do is keep safety first and what I would recommend is taking the trick or treat candy, keeping it in one location as best as possible and keeping it maybe on the higher up area where the dog can't get to it. And I would totally have a family meeting with the children and let them know while we like chocolate, it's not really good for Petey. So what we can do, is this is an appropriate treat that we can actually give Petey but we want to make sure that we keep these treats away from Petey. And you'd be amazed at how quick children are to understand that concept and understand, "this candy is mine and we can give Petey anything we want from his treat box."
